Final Fantasy 14 goes mobile with Lightspeed Studio and Square Enix at the helm

Square Enix and Tencent’s Lightspeed Studio revealed that Final Fantasy 14 will soon arrive on mobile. The MMORPG game is set to launch with nine playable job classes when launched with a global release to come after the completion of play tests in China.

Final Fantasy 14 was developed by Square Enix and released in September 2010. The MMORPG game initially failed before turning it into a cultural classic in gaming circles. By 2024, the game had become the most profitable game in the franchise, with over 30 million registered players after expansions to accommodate PlayStation consoles.

In 2024, the developers announced that the game would continue its expansion to new platforms.

Square Enix reveals Final Fantasy 14 for mobile

Naoki Yoshida, the lead producer and director of Final Fantasy 14, revealed that the game will soon be available on mobile devices. Yoshida shared the update in an opening statement at the start of a new reveal trailer launched by Square Enix.

The Final Fantasy 14 producer stated that the decision was made to prepare the franchise to face the “challenges of the next decade.” Yoshida added that Lightspeed Studios, the studio leading the project, is dedicated to recreating the story and other aspects of the original MMORPG game for mobile devices.

The trailer displayed Eorzea in its grandeur, revealing locations familiar to original Final Fantasy 14 players. Iconic locations revealed included the bustling cities of Ul’dah and Limsa Lominsa, as well as the lively Gold Saucer.

Gamers were also treated to some colorful and insightful scenes about the MMORPG’s gameplay. The trailer featured vibrant celebrations featuring the Lalafell race and intense combat sequences. The most prominent combat scene featured was a group battle against the formidable Primal Titan. Gamers will be tasked with tackling various obstacles and opponents to deliver Eorzea from certain destruction at the behest of the Mothercrystal.

According to the MMORPG’s official website, the mobile game will be released with nine out of the original game’s 22 playable jobs. The jobs expected based on the information gleaned from the game reveal include fan favorites like Black Mage, Warrior, and Dragoon, alongside all crafting and gathering roles.

The MMORPG will also launch with 11 crafting and gathering classes. Gamers can participate in other non-combat activities, such as Chocobo racing and the Triple Triad card games at the Gold Saucer. Gamers can also participate in various festive seasonal events. The game is also set to retain the social structure of the console and PC versions.

Gamers react to Square Enix’s launch plan reveal

Square Enix did not provide a specific release date for the mobile MMORPG game. However, the studio revealed its plans leading up to the game’s global release. The MMORPG is set for play tests in China prior to its undesignated global release in the future.

Gamers can pre-register to receive updates in the lead-up to the game’s release.

In light of the announcement, gamers online gave mixed reactions to the new mobile MMORPG. Some gamers welcomed the mobile iteration of the game, stating that they couldn’t wait to play it.

At the same time, gamers on the other side of the bias voiced concerns over the MMORPG’s controls on mobile, the PUBG developer’s involvement, and the fact that it is a standalone project.
