Australian rapper Iggy Azalea doesn’t seem to be over her “beef” with Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin even though he has consistently ignored her.
This time, she took shots at him over his singing at Singapore’s TOKEN2049 event. The performance was actually about Ethereum’s milestones and ambitions.
Vitalik sang about lowering transaction fees with L2 solutions, reducing confirmation times after the Merge, and balancing mainstream adoption with preserving decentralization.
The video was met with amusement and respect within the community. Some found it refreshing, while others saw it as a bizarre act from someone known for disliking the spotlight.
Justin Sun, founder of TRON, praised Vitalik for stepping out of his comfort zone. Vitalik, often quiet and reserved, has never directly mentioned Iggy.
All he did a few months ago was share how sad he was that this meme coin cycle has been completely taken over by celebrities who don’t care about the crypto ecosystem at all, or even understand it.
He said that he would prefer it if these celebrities would focus on creating tokens that bring actual value to the world.
Iggy took that personally and went off on his through multiple Twitter posts.
So yesterday, she hosted her own crypto-themed event in Las Vegas, promoting her useless memecoin, MOTHER, and her new online casino, Motherland.
The event was packed with influencers, crypto fans, and naturally, plenty of controversy.
Iggy performed hits like ‘Fancy’ and ‘Kream,’ hyping up the crowd. After her performance, she mingled with guests, including crypto influencers and fans of her work.
Before you knew it, pictures and videos were flying around, making it look like an extremely indecent gathering that goes against the ethos of crypto.
As per usual, Iggy went straight to Twitter, mocking those criticizing her party. She didn’t name Vitalik directly, but she didn’t have to. She said:
“A lot of y’all online are very boring and big mad. Lmfao. Let people let loose and have fun for a night. I don’t complain about watching you all mumble around on conference stages singing songs about crypto or other loser shit I’d be embarrassed as fuck to post.”
Iggy added that she doesn’t care about the criticisms, defending her party as a legitimate way to connect with high-level people in the industry.
“Stop tryna explain how partying affects real-life business when you don’t even do high-level business deals to begin with. You can’t do sh*t to stop anything going on ‘cause you aren’t important, and the guys calling the shots are already in the building.”
She dismissed critics—and Vitalik—as out of touch and irrelevant.
The truth, however, is that hosting a flashy event to promote an online casino doesn’t exactly scream credibility.
Such events could reinforce negative stereotypes about the crypto industry being all about quick money and gambling, rather than serious financial technology.
There are also ethical concerns. With her reach, Iggy could attract a younger, more impressionable audience to a platform that promotes gambling.
Associating a casino with a memecoin could lead to financial irresponsibility and gambling addiction issues, which are already huge problems in both industries.
And this is the same woman who just a few weeks ago, believed that Ethereum’s gas fees were going to Vitalik.
This whole thing shows there’s a split in the crypto community. You’ve got the old-school crowd that wants to keep things serious and legit.
Then there are newcomers like Iggy, who want to make crypto a part of modern entertainment and don’t care if it pisses folks off.
I’d wager that these two sides are going to keep butting heads for a while.
